What is a mashup?
Melty’s FAQ defines a mashup as “a mod that joins games into one”, giving SkyCraft as the example: you play Skyrim as a Minecraft player melty.gg FAQ. The public listing also includes single-game mods, such as a multiplayer mod for Halo: Combat Evolved melty.gg/discover. See popular mashups for more combinations.
What pressing Play actually does
The FAQ says Play “downloads the mashup, installs what it needs and starts the game”, and that “uninstalling puts every file back as it was” melty.gg FAQ. The Terms of Service spell out what you allow the app to do on your PC Melty Terms:
- find installed games and read their versions, to show what you can play;
- download the mashup’s files and the tools it needs — mod loaders, launchers, build tools — from Melty or the original authors’ sources;
- write files into game folders, keeping a copy of anything it replaces so it can restore the game when you remove the mashup;
- build parts of a mashup on your PC with tools downloaded into its own folder;
- when a mashup uses your own copy of a game, look for it on your drives and copy the files it needs into the mashup’s folder;
- start your games and any setup steps; and update itself automatically.
The Privacy Policy adds that the list of your games and the files of your own copies are handled on your PC and “aren’t uploaded” Melty Privacy Policy.
Multiplayer
Multiplayer mashups come with an invite link you can keep private, share or make public melty.gg FAQ. When you host, other players connect to your PC, and Melty shares your game’s IP address and port with the players who join; Melty does not run game servers, voice or chat Melty Terms.
Who makes the mashups?
Players and creators. Melty’s FAQ says you can copy Melty’s instructions into Claude Code or Codex, describe what you want, and the agent builds and publishes it melty.gg FAQ. Creators can also publish from a GitHub repository Melty Terms. More on that in make your own mashup.
