How to merge two games with AI
Most mashups are built by people directing an AI coding agent, not by hand. Here is how that process works, according to Melty and the community guides behind the trend.
How AI game merging works
A popular GitHub guide describes the common approach as a passthrough mod: both games run at once and talk to each other, one hosting the world while the other supplies gameplay such as movement and combat Decrypt AI Game Modding Guides. A bigger alternative is rewriting a game’s engine so it runs on its own and reads your game files at runtime AI Game Modding Guides.
The agent writes the code; your job is to decide what you want, describe problems clearly, playtest (the agent can’t feel the game), and keep the project organised AI Game Modding Guides.
Route 1: publish to Melty with your coding agent
Melty’s FAQ: “Copy Melty’s instructions into Claude Code or Codex and say what you want. Your agent builds it and publishes it.” melty.gg FAQ Things the Terms add:
- A release goes live only after Melty has seen it running on your PC and it has passed the audit Melty Terms.
- You are responsible for what a connected coding agent publishes with your token Melty Terms.
- You can also publish automatically from a GitHub repository you connect Melty Terms.
- Only publish what you have the right to share — every file, including game files Melty Terms.
Route 2: an open-source toolkit
universal-modder is an MIT-licensed set of skills, tools and a shared knowledge base that lets an AI coding agent mod PC games you own; its README lists install commands for Claude Code, Codex, Gemini CLI, Cursor, GitHub Copilot and OpenCode universal-modder README. It is a separate project, not part of Melty.
Route 3: follow the community guides
The AI Game Modding Guides lay out the steps in order AI Game Modding Guides:
- Pick games you own that are single-player or offline.
- Search for existing mod loaders, mods or decompilation projects first.
- Set up an AI agent on your PC (an agent, not a chat website).
- Install the games and confirm they run normally.
- Open the agent in a new, empty project folder with a starter prompt.
- Playtest and report back with what happened and the logs.
- Keep notes so a fresh session can pick up where you left off.
- Share it as a GitHub repo with no game files in it.
Honest expectations
- Time
- Minutes to many hours; one Elden Ring + Spider-Man mashup took about 3–4 hours and was “jank but playable” AI Game Modding Guides
- Cost
- Agents use paid plans or API credits with usage limits AI Game Modding Guides
- Skills
- No coding knowledge needed to start, though a little helps AI Game Modding Guides
- Limits
- Online games with anti-cheat won’t work AI Game Modding Guides
The controversy
Eurogamer reported a backlash from some modders against the flood of AI mashups, and noted that most circulating mods rely on decompiled code and assets the builders have no rights to; Nexus Mods’ AI-content policy encourages avoiding such tools without explicit permission for all assets Eurogamer.
